Carved, limestone cupules placed on a grave is one of the earliest examples of primitive man’s evolution as objects, in addition to being functional, took on meaning. Expression–that is, the language of art–was about to be invented, and as such, endless in possibilities. Plates, textiles, wall hangings and earthenware were treated all-over with primary shapes, forms, patterns and compositions: documenting and story-telling beliefs and experiences of the times. The beautification gave way to style and simultaneously recognized life’s purpose beyond survival, until it was considered naïve in civilization’s progress. Rules and ideologies became the new tenets of fulfillment, and not necessarily of the individual. Art was placed under restrictions deciding its value at all. A break in convention was necessary if expression was to regain its original significance, and variety, a proponent for evolution. Perhaps, a return to the primitive language of art could lead the way, once again.
IOI OOI New Primitives –an exhibit of paper-folded, modern artifacts–is an interpretation of the first, language of art to create another.

Colours used in artworks pertain to those available to primitive man, found in nature. Reds, pink, browns, blacks and whites symbolize earth, fire, life, knowledge and death. The patterns created with paper–painted, folded, including spaces and structures–are a contemporary evolution of the stone, sticks and finger-painting-in-the-sand methods implemented originally, and like prehistoric artifacts, are treated all-over: front and back, inside and outside of the artworks. The process is a further manifestation of creating “something out of nothing,” where ground becomes canvas, surface becomes sculpture and paper becomes object. Artworks are titled as archaeological records of a contemporaneous expression of art under way.
